"Whether you realize it or not, we are engaging in a cultural revolution. We are bringing people together. We are bringing people from all levels of life, understanding, and background together. That's the wonderful thing about drumming."--Babatunde Olatunji Welcome to Batucaxé! We are a non-profit percussion and dance ensemble based in Tucson, Arizona. We learn, explore, perform and teach rhythm and movement, drawing inspiration from the music of Brazil and around the world. Batucaxé began as a small group of friends who came together in 2003 to drum and march in the annual Mt. Lemmon parade. Since then the group has grown dramatically in membership and in scope. Our Community Group, the heart of Batucaxé, provides a joyful opportunity to learn percussion and dance, and the art of expressing these skills as an ensemble. Our Performance Group is a smaller troupe of dedicated musicians and dancers who share the excitement with a wider range of audiences. Weekly Dance Classes bring together novice and advanced dancers, with live drumming to set the beat. And our Outreach programs enable us to present this music to the next generation of fans and performers. Above all Batucaxé is a Community of players, dancers, administrators and supporters who are committed to being a positive force for our city, and our world. |
