The Community Group includes over fifty members who are expanding their knowledge of percussion and movement. Some are playing or dancing for the first time. Some are seasoned percussionists and performers. It's open to all levels of ability, from all walks of life. The result is an amazing, supportive Community, and a huge, soul-satisfying sound. Latest Video of Batucaxe Community Group Our Community Group is modeled on the "blocos" of Bahia, Brazil, and the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro and São Pãulo. These groups are major centers of neighborhood activity, often with thousands of participants. Their annual Carnaval performances explode with pride and hope. Our goal is to create a similar environment of support and appreciation for our own community. Several times per year our Community Group brings its big sound to local stages. The pound of dozens of drummers, the intense energy and joy of our dancers, and the vibrant rhythms...it's an incredible rush. The Community Group meets weekly to learn rhythms, songs and choreography. Individual lessons help new members get up to speed, and sectional rehearsals help everyone work together. Our repertoire is designed to be accessible to any player with a good ear, reasonable memory and willingness to practice. Members also learn about the life, history and music of Afro-Brazilian culture through educational and cultural events, guest instructors and performances, and master classes. Instruments are available for loan, and our extensive Resource Library is open for all. If you want to delve even deeper into these music and dance styles you can consider becoming a member of Batucaxé's Performance Group. These dancers and drummers commit to a more rigorous schedule of rehearsals and performances to grow in their appreciation of the dance and to hone their skills even further.
